Seria, Sultanate of Brunei

Panaga is the largest of the Shell schools worldwide, located close to the sea in a tropical locale, within a family-oriented community. This friendly, multi-cultural school truly represents the spirit of internationalism with over 600 children from 34 different nationalities.

The school occupies three buildings across two sites. The youngest children attend the Mendaram Building (Nursery). Children then progress to the adjacent Rampayoh Building (Milepost 1). The older children are taught in the Teraja Building (Mileposts 2 and 3).

Both sites are very well-equipped and have generous outdoor playing areas. The younger years’ playground enjoys a panoramic view of the sea. Each site has a multi-purpose hall, a well-resourced library, an ICT suite and a music room. All classrooms are air-conditioned and fitted with modern furniture. Interactive whiteboards in each classroom facilitate learning through the very latest in technology.

The experienced staff and small class sizes at Panaga ensure individual attention and excellence and enjoyment in learning. Currently there are 37 full-time teachers and 17 part-time teachers. All year groups have classroom assistants. The children benefit from specialist teachers in ICT, music, second languages and PE. In addition, children from P1 and above enjoy weekly swimming sessions from an experienced swim coach at the nearby Panaga Club.

The school incorporates two streams – International and Dutch – with teachers from both streams working closely together. Each stream follows its own national curriculum for language and numeracy. The International Primary Curriculum is taught for all other subjects and both streams learn collaboratively in these sessions. Weekly assemblies on both sites are held to further facilitate integration. Assemblies follow a programme designed to offer opportunities to celebrate the cultural diversity at Panaga, showcase the achievements of classes and individual children and allow outside speakers/performers to visit.

A wide range of after school activities is open to the children – including creative and performing arts, sports and academic activities. A comprehensive calendar of cultural, community and educational day visits also support the children’s learning. P5 to P8 children participate in residential experiences – designed to promote personal and social development – in different parts of Borneo and in Singapore. Across the academic year each of the four age phases of the school stage a musical performance for the community.

Connections with neighbouring schools are strong, enabling valuable partnership learning opportunities (eg. inter-school quizzes, sports fixtures). Each year, Panaga School hosts a mixed-gender football tournament that attracts schools from different parts of SE Asia.

Parents are actively encouraged to participate in school activities and many assist with weekly group reading, the school libraries and school trips. A supportive Parent Teacher Panel works to further enrich the children’s experiences through Theme Days, charity work and age-banded social events.

Brunei is a safe, tolerant Muslim country. With its natural beauty and excellent social and recreational opportunities, it is a wonderful place for families to live. Panaga School provides a safe, welcoming and enriching environment for children adjusting to relocation or starting school for the first time.
