Information about the school
The NLNG School is made up of two streams; the International stream and the Nigerian stream. Within the International stream are two departments; the English International Department and the Dutch International Department. There is an overall headteacher, heads of each of the international departments and a head of common curriculum. The common curriculum team consists of teachers who teach subjects to children in both streams.
The English International Department follows the English National Curriculum for English and mathematics, while the Dutch International Department follows the Dutch ‘Kerndoelen’ for language and maths. The international departments join together to use the International Primary Curriculum to facilitate learning in all subjects other than literacy and mathematics. The Nigerian stream follows the Nigerian curriculum in all subjects.
Children in the two streams get together during school assemblies, after school activities and in sporting events. There are also other opportunities for integration throughout the year with specialist programmes such as the Christmas workshop, school productions and music concerts. In addition, children from across the board interact with each other outside school, during family fun events and sporting activities such as karate classes and children’s tennis clinics.
The school is located in the middle of the NLNG Residential Area (RA). This is a leafy, spacious, fenced compound with a manned gate. The school is constantly expanding as the population grows. It is fully air conditioned and has great facilities with an excellent purpose built sound-proof music room, an art studio and a well designed and stocked library. There are spacious play areas with a variety of play equipment.
Recreational facilities on camp are excellent. For sports enthusiasts there is a swimming pool, tennis courts, squash courts and a gymnasium, as well as a large sports hall, a running track, a football pitch and a nine-hole golf course. All other needs are catered for, with a supermarket and medical centre as well as bars and restaurants. All houses have satellite TV and there is a good library which has regular deliveries of books and DVDs to suit many tastes.
In the past few years there have been restrictions on movement around the Delta region of Nigeria. These are currently being lifted and now it is possible to shop, relax and explore around Bonny Island.
